Reality Bites x SUCCESS: a Gift and a Curse by J. White
“Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering.”
- Theodore Roosevelt
Webster dictionary defines Success as: “the favorable or desired outcome; also: the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence.” Success is the goal we strive for whenever we set out to accomplish something. The feeling of joy that overcomes you when you worked, strived, and completed a goal is unmatched; even a euphoric high. But is it possible that the gift of overcoming the challenge placed in front of you a burden or curse?
Have you ever wanted something so bad that you would do and did everything to obtain it? And once you got it you either A. didn’t know what do with it once it was yours. B. Realized it was more than you bargained for. Or even worse C. didn’t want it? We chase, we pray, and we work to reach a certain level of status, but once that status is achieved we tend to not know what to do with it. Everything hits us all at once, and if not prepared mentally, it can seem like an overload. Even the immediate people around you will change. You will have those who want to ride the coattails, and reap the benefits of your works. You’re the “new hot thing” they’ll ask “what can you do for me?” You will also have those who will want to tear you down. The moment the road gets tough for you, they’ll disappear. Why? Because they actually want to see you struggle. (Amazing isn’t it?) And you know what the weird part about it is? It’s perfectly fine. I know that seems like an oxymoron but let me explain a little further.
The saying goes “It’s not about the outcome, it’s about the journey that gets you there. “ We never understand that while in the midst of the journey. All we see is the fact we worked for our position, and now the weight of the world is being placed on our shoulders. We let our detractors get to us, no matter what form it may come in. We’re human. It’s ok to have these emotions. It means you’re conscious of your surroundings. Emotions show that you care vs. the popular notion that showing emotions make you weak. Let these challenges be fuel to your fire. Those detractors are the fuel to the fire that will boost you to reach higher than you have before. That weight of the world on your shoulders is only to strengthen them and make them broader to plow through any thing standing in your way of your goals. Truth be told, there is no success without scrutiny. It’s a yin-yang relationship. It builds up character and tests your desires to see if you really want what you’re asking for. You’ll look back one day and realize the scrutiny you went through allowed you to be in the position you’re in now, and be happy you didn’t give up.
